How to Choose Your Lens Thickness | Lens Index & Package Guide

When customizing your glasses, selecting the right lens thickness (known as the Lens Index) is the most important step to make sure your frames look great and feel lightweight.

To make things completely stress-free, our website does the heavy lifting for you! Once you enter your vision prescription at checkout, our system will automatically analyze your numbers and recommend the absolute best lens package for your specific vision needs.

If you want to understand how our optical laboratory custom-crafts these options, here is a simple breakdown of how lens thickness works, our specific packages, and frame compatibility rules.

What is a "Lens Index" and What Are Lenses Made From?

The "Index" is simply a technical number that measures how efficiently a lens material bends light. The higher the index number, the thinner and lighter the lens will be.

Depending on the package you select, our laboratory utilizes different high-quality materials to maximize your visual clarity:

  • 1.50 Standard Index (CR-39 Plastic): Our standard, durable plastic lenses. These are ideal for weak-to-moderate prescriptions ranging between -1.75 and +1.75. For stronger prescriptions, standard lenses can become heavy or look thick around the edges of the frame.

  • 1.59 Index (Polycarbonate): The gold standard for active lifestyles. Polycarbonate is a specialized high-impact resistant safety material that is 10 times more impact-resistant than standard plastic. It is up to 22% thinner than basic lenses and is highly recommended for children's glasses, sports frames, and prescriptions around +/- 4.00.

  • 1.61 Index (High-Index): A premium, lightweight plastic material designed to reduce weight. These lenses are up to 20% to 25% thinner than standard lenses and work beautifully for prescriptions ranging from -4.00 to +3.00.

  • 1.67 Index (Super Thin / Ultra-Thin): A high-tech material engineered to eliminate the "coke-bottle" look. These lenses are up to 32% to 40% thinner than standard options, making them the optimal choice for moderate-to-high prescriptions ranging from -8.00 to +6.00.

  • 1.74 Index (Our Thinnest Lenses): Reserved for exceptionally strong prescriptions. If your vision requirements are beyond the standard limits, these ultra-thin configurations are available by contacting our Customer Care team after placing your order (subject to prescription eligibility).

Prescription Sunglasses Packages

When ordering prescription sunglasses, the packages shift to prioritize absolute sun protection and rich color tints:

  • Value Package: Features 1.5 Index standard-thickness lenses. Recommended for lower prescriptions (-1.75 to +1.75). Includes full UV400 protection to block harmful ultraviolet rays.

  • Standard Package (Lite and Thin): Features lightweight 1.60 Index lenses that are up to 20% thinner than the Value option. This package adds an extra Scratch-Resistant coating alongside standard UV400 protection.

  • Super Package (Super Thin): Features ultra-lightweight 1.67 Index lenses that are up to 32% thinner than the basic value package. Built with high-index performance, this option keeps stronger prescriptions looking sleek and includes both Scratch-Resistant and UV400 protection.

Frame Restrictions: Prescription Clip-On Sunglasses

Are you planning to use a magnetic clip-on sun shade with your new prescription glasses? Please be aware of this specific optical limitation:

⚠️ The Clip-On Exclusion Rule: If your doctor's prescription slip features a high positive (+) Sphere (SPH) value, custom clip-on accessories are not recommended. Lenses with strong positive sphere powers naturally bulge or protrude forward from the center of the frame. This physical curve prevents a magnetic clip-on from sitting securely or clipping flat against the eyeglasses.

Please note: The higher the index, the thinner the lens.
Important: not all lens indexes will be available for all frames and prescription types.
